  • Horse and sheep round-up in Miðfjörður

Every autumn the free grazing sheep and horses are rounded up in the highland, the beautiful Arnarvatnsheiði, collected from the farmers in Miðfjördur in North-West-Iceland and driven home to their local valleys – an exceptional event that resembles a public festival. There is no other time when Icelandic Traditions are as much alive as during the sheep round-up called “Réttir”. This yearly event is a good way to get to know Icelanders and some of their traditions and the best opportunity for the Icelandic horse to show his talents: Full of energy, strong and sure-footed, it is an irreplaceable partner for this work! We welcome you to take part on horseback in this unique experience – and help the collect the hundreds of sheep and pretty, wild young horses and fillies!

    Day 1, Tue.Day 2, Wed.Day 3, Thu.Day 4, Fri.Day 5, Sat.Day 6, Sun.Day 7, Mon.
Reception at the airport in Keflavík between 15:00 and 16.30 or in Reykjavík around 17:30. Transfer to the farm Brekkulækur (approx. 3.5 h), where we will spend the next 5 nights, and dinner there.
The morning is at your leisure. After lunch, you will get to know the horses and the riding style during a long ride through our beautiful river valley.
    Brekkulækur – Aðalból
Today we ride the first stage towards the highland on nice paths along the river, accompanied by our herd of free running horses. The horses stay at a pasture overnight and we return to Brekkulækur. Afterwards, we will relax in a natural hot swimming pool.
    Aðalból – Brekkulækur
A ling day lies ahead of us! We are going by bus to the sheep and horse meeting point in the highland. There, we have a good view and can observe the how the round up is coming along and help where we can. After an Icelandic picnic, we watch how the big herd is driven down to the valley. Then, we will saddle our horses and ride back to Brekkulækur with our own herd.
In the early morning, we will go the corral and observe how the owners separate the mares, foals and fillies. It is amazing to see how they accomplish that and exciting for us, because our young horses are also among the herd. Around noon the sheep arrive at the fold, and the farmers start sorting them out. This takes most of the day and it is easy to learn and everybody is welcome to take part! Later this evening, when both sheep and horses are back to their home farms, we will go to a party and dance with live music at the community centre.
Transport to Reykjavík in the late morning, sightseeing opportunity there and night-lodging at a downtown guesthouse.
Transfer to the airport and goodbye to Iceland.
