  • Horse and sheep round-up in Miðfjörður

    8 DAYS – ICELANDIC TRADITIONS

Every autumn the free grazing sheep and horses are rounded up in the highland, the beautiful Arnarvatnsheiði, collected from the farmers in Miðfjördur in North-West-Iceland and driven home to their local valleys – an exceptional event that resembles a public festival. There is no other time when Icelandic Traditions are as much alive as during the sheep round-up called “Réttir”. This yearly event is a good way to get to know Icelanders and some of their traditions and the best opportunity for the Icelandic horse to show his talents: Full of energy, strong and sure-footed, it is an irreplaceable partner for this work! We welcome you to take part on horseback in this unique experience – and help the collect the hundreds of sheep and pretty, wild young horses and fillies!

Transfer to the farm Brekkulækur (approx. 3.5 h), where we will spend the next 6 nights, and dinner there. (D)
    Brekkulækur
The morning is at your leisure. After lunch, you will get to know the horses and riding style during a ride through our beautiful river valley. (B, L, D)
    Brekkulækur – Aðalból
Today we ride the first stage towards the highland on nice paths along the river, accompanied by our herd of free running horses. The horses stay at a pasture overnight and we return to Brekkulækur. Afterwards, we will relax in a natural hot water swimming pool. (B, P, D)
    Aðalból – Arnarvatnsheiði – Brekkulækur
A long eventful day lies ahead of us today! We follow how the horses and sheep are rounded up and arrive at the gathering point. After an Icelandic picnic we watch the big herd being herded down the valley before we saddle our horses and ride back to Brekkulækur with our herd. (B, P, D)
    Brekkulækur – sheep
In the morning we ride towards the flock of sheep and accompany them to the corral. Then the farmers start sorting them out. This takes most of the day and is easy to learn and everybody is welcome to take part! Later this evening, when the sheep are back at their home farms, we will go to a party and dance to live music at the community centre. (B, D)
    Brekkulækur – horses
Today we start in the morning and help driving the huge herd of horses to the pen – a beautiful ride at „dawn“. Then mares, foals and young horses are gradually sorted out by their owners from the large herd. It will be exciting because our young horses will also be there. (B, D)
    Reykjavík
After breakfast we will leave Brekkulækur and transfer to Reykjavík with sightseeing opportunity there and night-lodging at a downtown based hotel. (B)
    Departure
Transfer to the airport early in the morning and goodbye to Iceland.
