The Great Sheep Event
8 DAYS – HIKING – NATURE – ICELANDIC TRADITIONS
In the northwest part of Iceland, we will visit the Vatnsnes peninsula with a seal colony, black beaches and the unique basalt formation Hvítserkur. Then the festival starts, where every year in September thousands of sheep and horses are driven down from the highlands, where they graze all summer, and return to their local valleys. There is no other time when Icelandic traditions are as much alive as during the sheep round-up called “réttir”. This yearly event is a public festival and a good way to get to know Icelanders and some of their oldest traditions. And last but not least: The northern lights season starts in September!

Reception at the airport Keflavík between 03:00 pm and 04:30 pm or in Reykjavík around 15:30 pm at the gas station N1, Ártúnshöfði on Vesturlandsvegur heading north out of town. Transfer to the guesthouse Brekkulækur in the north west of Iceland, where we will spend the next 6 nights.(D)Brekkulækur
A relaxing day of freedom and exploration of the surroundings lies ahead of us. Beautiful hiking opportunities right on our doorstep. (B,L,D)Vatnsnes Peninsula – Seals
After breakfast, we will go for an excursion around the unique peninsula Vatnsnes, walk along black beaches and watch the seals. We will also look at the unique basalt formation Hvítserkur. We end the day with a relaxing bath in natural hot swimming pool of Hvammstangi. (B, P, D)Núpssdalur – Highland – Sheep – Hiking day
After breakfast, we drive to the highland and go for a hike, where we will join the herds and herders and help for some hours to drive sheep and lambs towards the pen. They leave the pastures of our community in the highland, where the sheep and horses have spent the summers for centuries. Therefore, the method to collect them is very traditional. Along with the sheep, the mares and their foals start their journey home from the mountains as well. (B, P, D)Brekkulækur – Miðfjarðarrétt – Sheep
Today around lunch time we will go to meet the sheep and accompany them to the pen. It is going to be a busy day at the “réttir” and we will take part as much and as long as we like. Brekkulækur is in sight of the fold. In the evening, there is a party „dance“ at the town house to celebrate the successful return of the sheep and horses (optional). A great day lies ahead as approximately 300 horses arrive at the pen this morning and are then sorted out by their owners who are happy to see their horses again. (B, D)Brekkulækur – Reykjavík
We leave the farm Brekkulækur and journey back to Reykjavik, Iceland’s lively capital, where you have time for sightseeing and shopping. We spend the night in a simple hotel. (B)Transfer to the airport
