SPRINGTIME HIGHLIGHT
8 DAYS - ROUND TRIP FOR ORNITHOLOGISTS AND NATURE LOVERS
In spring time millions of birds of passage come to Iceland. We will experience a magic landscape and nature's return to life after a long winter. Thunderous brooks, lively birds, bleating lambs. Among the birds we meet are: Puffins, Razorbills, the common Guillemot, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Harlequin ducks, Eiders, Red-necked Phalaropes, Snipes, Oystercatchers, Ptarmigan, Gyrfalcons and more. Other highlights during this journey: a trip into the Highland - Arnarvatnsheiði as well as a hiking- day along the impressive and stunningly beautiful steep coast Látrabjarg in the Western Fjords. We will explore the island by car, by boat and on foot and there will be time to relax in natural hot pools. All true lovers of nature and especially those interested in birds will enjoy this tour!
PROGRAM "Springtime Highlight "
Day 1: Arrival -Brekkulækur
Welcome at the airport Keflavík or in Reykjavík between 14.00 -17:00. Transfer to our farm-house Brekkulækur (approx. 3,5 hrs.) where we will spend the next 2 days.
Day 2:: Brekkulækur-Vatnsnes
In the morning you will wake up to the lovely sound of birds present on the countryside: Golden plover, redshank, common snipe, dunlin, whimbrel, meadow pipit, redwing, raven. At first we will explore the surroundings of the farm where you will meet Icelandic horses. In the afternoon we will visit a seal colony on the peninsula Vatnsnes. With a bit of luck we will also come across the horned grebe and the red-throated loon. In the evening relaxation-time in a nearby natural hot swimming pool.
Day 3: Highland trip
Today we will drive up into the Highland lake district in Arnarvatnsheiði. We'll take a hiking tour to the remote little hut Lónaborg. We'll try fishing trout and we will be looking out for "highlanders" like the great northern diver, long-tailed duck, whooper swans, merlin und gyrfalcons. We might even meet a polar fox.
Day4:Brekkulækur-Westfjords-Patreksfjörður
We are leaving the farm Brekkulækur and are going for a longer drive by minibus to the Western Fjords. You will be enchanted by the impressive scenery of the Fjords around Breiðafjörður and the magic waterfall Dynjandifoss. We will spend the night there in a simple guesthouse in Patreksfjörður.
Day 5: Látrabjarg
Hiking along the gigantic steep coast Látrabjarg, Europe's biggest colony for seabirds. 13 km long and up to 440 metres high. There we will watch thousands of seabirds: Fulmar, kittiwake, razorbill, guillemot, thick-billed murre and the trusting puffin.
Day 6: Patreksfjörður-ferryboat to Arnarstapi
Across a steep mountain-pass our journey will take us to the little harbour Brjánslækur. We will take a break at the tideland and look out for knots and turnstones who stop there every spring on their way from Europe to Greenland. When time allows we will go for a walk down a canyon where fossilized plants can be found. Later we continue our journey by boat across the bay of Breiðafjörður to the little town Stykkishólmur situated on the mystic and legendary peninsula Snæfellsnes. From there we will go by minibus to the village Arnarstapi where we will stay overnight in a small guesthouse. Nearby is a huge Arctic tern colony as well as a wonderful black lava coast and more birds: Black guillemot and sometimes the northern gannet.
Day 7: Arnarstapi - Garðskagavík-Keflavík
From Arnarstapi we will go South to the peninsula Reykjanes, short stay in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. Then on to the light-house Garðskagavík a famous observation point for bird watching. Overnight stay in a plain guest-house.
Day 8: Departure
Transfer to the airport and good-bye to Iceland.
